Birkirkara, then a village, now a large town, was home to families who had lived there for generations – no supermarkets, no posh shops, no fancy restaurants, most people still living as they had always lived – up with the dawn and bed as soon as darkness had descended – except on feast days!
The British Service families lived in blocks of flats in and around Sliema near “civilisation”, whereas we had no wish to replicate what we could have in the UK, and wished to make the most of our unusual surroundings and a new way of life.
Before we even arrived in the village, everyone knew we were coming and welcomed us with smiles and waves – and as a small child Nic was fussed over, hugged and played with wherever we went!
